Departing from the village of La Malène, in the Lozère, the Bateliers des Gorges du Tarn take you on one of the most beautiful river boat rides in France . Since 1875, long before the road arrived, local guides have been steering their flat-bottomed boats along the 8 most spectacular kilometres of the Gorges: soaring cliffs, turquoise waters, wild fauna and flora, and stories of a thousand-year-old history.
What makes this experience unforgettable is not only the landscapes, it is the boatmen themselves. Organised as a cooperative since 1952, these are men and women who live on site, know every meander of the Tarn, every bird species, every legend of the causse. They share their passion with humour and generosity, adapting to all audience, from families with newborns to groups of forty. One hour of guided descent, a minibus return along the hairpin road, and a vision of the territory that stays with you.
Featured on Arte, TF1, France 3 and M6's Échappées Belles, this experience is one of the most iconic in the Lozère. Open April to October, accessible to all, pets welcome.
