Beneath the Causse Méjean, more than one hundred metres below the surface of the Lozère, lies one of the Earth's greatest secrets. The Aven Armand, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the "Causses and Cévennes" ensemble, shelters a forest of 400 giant stalagmites, including the tallest in the world, rising to 30 metres. Discovered in 1897 by Louis Armand, who descended on a simple rope ladder, this chasm had until then been nicknamed by locals the "Devil's Gullet", such was the fear it inspired.
Today, a funicular takes you in two minutes to the heart of the Grande Salle , as vast as the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris . There, in a cool and silent atmosphere, a sound and light show narrated by the voice of Jules Verne reveals the enchanting beauty of this underground world, shaped drop by drop over 30 million years.
